WHAT IS THE EDUCATION SYSTEM LIKE IN CANADA?

Compulsory education in Canada is 12 years, to the end of high school. After graduation, students are eligible to apply to enter universities, colleges, or vocational education colleges. Canada's education system is generally publicly funded and has a uniformly high standard across the country. Canadian universities are public and have excellent reputations for teaching and research. Canadian degrees are consistently recognized internationally as quality degrees.

WHAT CULTURE AND LANGUAGE STUDY OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE?

To get full immersion, and strengthen your English skills, we recommend that you take short-term culture and language study during the summer and winter school holidays.

You will learn English in the classroom for half day. In the afternoon, you can attend different activities host by the school or community. This is a great opportunity to experience multicultural exchanges with students from all over the world. In TRU’s and Selkirk’s programs you can learn English, sightsee, and experience Canadian university campus life, all within a few weeks that will change your life.

WHERE WOULD I STAY WHILE I AM IN CANADA STUDYING?

Homestay is board and lodging, but also an opportunity for you to participate in local family life, make lifelong connections, integrate into local culture, and improve language skills.

When you are studying in high school, the school arranges for students to live with a local host family. Host families are carefully screened to ensure that every student has a beneficial, comfortable, and safe living environment. Homestay includes board and lodging and a private bedroom for the student. We believe that all the students will feel that they have a "home away from home" environment.

When studying at Thompson Rivers University or Selkirk College, students can choose to live in a homestay or student in-campus housing. It’s all about your needs and preferences. After 19 years of age, outside of campus housing is also permitted.
